About the Artist

Vanessa Laurin is a wearer of many hats, both proverbial and fashionable. She was born on a Royal Canadian Air Force base to a German mother and French-Canadian father, and began making strange noises, befriending animals and plants, and conjuring bizarre things shortly thereafter. She crossed the Atlantic in the early 1980s, and has been based near Ottawa, Canada, ever since.

Her deep connection to the natural world is reflected in her many creative outlets, which also serve to fund her wildlife advocacy work. She is a patron of several wild bird rescue and conservation organizations, including the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Birds Canada, Destined to Fly Species at Risk Care, Swift Care Ontario, and Safe Wings Ottawa, as well as a financial backer of other initiatives such as The Messenger documentary. She is the former co-director of Wildlife Rescue Nests (2014-2019), a charitable foundation that provides assistance to wildlife rehabilitators worldwide.
